The importance of art and creativity in Scottish education was recently highlighted by Education Secretary Michael Russell as he opened the Glasgow Girls exhibition in Kirkcudbright.

Mr Russell said:

“Scotland has a rich heritage of excellence in the world of art, both in terms of our artists and the quality of international art displayed in our galleries… I firmly believe exhibitions like these can inspire young Scots to explore their own creativity and imagination. From art projects in our schools, right through to our world renowned art colleges – our young people have fantastic opportunities to explore their artistic side.

“Curriculum for Excellence is designed to give our young people the skills they need for life and work. There is no doubt that the skills they learn from engagement with the arts are valuable in firing their creative imaginations. Art can help our young people to be a success in many fields, inspiring the Glasgow Girls and Boys of the future and promoting our country’s rich tradition through the next generation and beyond.”

The Glasgow Girls exhibition runs from the 3rd July until the 30th of August and represents the work of nearly 40 women artists, designers and craft-workers who studied Glasgow School of Art and worked in Glasgow during the early part of the 20th century. It accompanies The Glasgow Boys exhibition taking place at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.
