Christmas toys learning boost
Kids across Scotland will get a learning boost in their Christmas stocking this year with this year’s list of top toys including a word game, a camcorder and an e-book reader.
Toys with educational benefits featured in a Which? top toys list include a camcorder designed especially for kids, a new version of Monopoly, which helps develop numeracy skills, the Boggle Flash game and the Storio
e-book reader.
Education Secretary Michael Russell welcomed the festive boost to literacy and numeracy saying:
“There are so many toys on the market at the moment that combine fun with learning. We already know about the educational benefits of computer games such as brain training that are being used in our classrooms. It is good news that there are also a number of other popular toys that will help boost kids literacy, numeracy and creative skills featuring in this years list of top toys.
“Clearly a game of monopoly that involves counting is helping children to learn about numeracy, an e-book reader harnesses the appeal of technology to get young people reading more, a camcorder can help develop creativity and word games such as Boggle Flash help build literacy skills – all in an entertaining way. Curriculum for Excellence is designed to bring learning to life where ever and when ever it takes place and the fact that we’re seeing so many educational toys topping the lists this year can only maximise the learning opportunities our children are getting at home, when they’re out and about and in the classrooms.”
