Curriculum for Excellence, Your Questions Answered
A brand new Question and Answer document on the implementation of the Curriculum for Excellence is available now on the CfE Communications Toolkit and Parentzone websites.
Commenters on Engage for Education asked for further clarification about a number of different areas that support the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence. Teachers and parents alike have in particular raised concerns and questions about areas such as assessment, the timetable and detail of implementation of the new qualifications, the period of learning from S1 to S3 and the senior phase.
In response, some questions have been answered directly on Engage for Education. It was clear, however, that there was a need to make this more detailed information widely available.
The Curriculum for Excellence Practitioner Group, which has been set up to support implementation of Curriculum for Excellence (following the Cabinet Secretary Michael Russell’s 10 point plan), has been looking at these issues. The Scottish Government has worked with Practitioner Group members to develop a detailed “Q&A” document that collects together the questions and answers that will help support practitioners in their own understanding and also assist them in their communications with parents and carers.
The Practitioner Group is made up of 12 heads of establishments from primary through to the college sector. Its main function is to provide the Cabinet Secretary with direct feedback on how implementation of Curriculum for Excellence is progressing on the ground, and to raise any issues around any obstacles to successful adoption of the new curriculum.
Further feedback on this document would be very welcome as would feedback on the wider support work for implementation of Curriculum for Excellence.

I wonder why the practitioner group for a 3 to 18 curriculum is made up of 12 heads of establishments from primary through to the college sector. Where is the Head Teacher from the nursery sector? Please do not tell me that one of the primaries has a nursery class – no offence intended to them – it just looks like nursery head teachers are being marginalised(again).

Thank you for your comments.
The Curriculum for Excellence Practitioner Group was established in parallel with the 10 point plan, which I announced back in April. This group has focused on exploring progress with implementation on the ground and the effectiveness of the support being offered and on implementation in primary and secondary schools. The colleges were included in this group because of their direct role in providing education to those pupils in secondary education. We continue to engage with practitioners in pre-school settings on progress with implementing Curriculum for Excellence, directly and also through Learning and Teaching Scotland.
