Fresh vision for adult literacy outlined
With adult literacy in Scotland already on a par with the world’s most advanced economies, the Scottish Government plans to improve literacy and numeracy levels even further.
Adult literacies in Scotland: 2020 (ALIS 2020) is part of the Government’s Literacy Action Plan and builds on existing work in recent months to raise standards even further.
Key actions include:
- local promotional plans to increase awareness of the services available.
- ensuring employers are aware of the benefits of workplace learning
- ensuring learners have access to high quality resources including e-learning technology.
Skills Minister Angela Constance said:
“Strong literacy skills help people fulfil their potential, achieve their goals, and take advantage of life’s opportunities. The Scottish Government’s recent Literacy Action Plan emphasised our commitment to raising the literacy skills of Scotland’s citizens from early years onwards.
“The findings of the Adult Literacies Survey are encouraging. However, we cannot be complacent. The Scottish Government is determined that no one should be disadvantaged by poor literacy and numeracy and I believe ALIS 2020 represents a significant step forward in improving this country’s literacy and numeracy skills.”
