Opportunity for New Year to build on past success
With the festive break drawing to a close, I’d like to take the chance to use this video message not only introduce myself but also reflect on the successes of the past year.
I was delighted to receive the early, and I confess surprise, Christmas gift of being appointed Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning. It is a great honour to be given Ministerial responsibility and the opportunity to make a difference.
I joined the Parliament in 2007 and am bringing experience of sitting on West Lothian Council’s education committee to my new post. In my previous role as a social worker, I have seen first hand what can happen to young people with no access to training and education.
The challenges brought by the recession and downturn are still clear. However, there are some positive signs. The latest youth unemployment figures show improvements with Scotland outperforming the UK average. Figures published earlier this month also paint an encouraging picture, with the chances of a school leaver going onto further study, training or employment higher than ever before.
I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this success over the past year and I look forward to working with you all in 2011.

A nicer Christmas present than many of us will be getting this year!! So still no chance of saving tax payer money by handing the roles of Minister for Children & Early Years AND Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning over to the oh so firm hands of the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning? Guess not while such blatant ‘featherbedding’ goes on amongst politicians.
