What do you think about Technologies for Learning?
In Scotland, we have already made significant progress with embedding technologies into everyday learning, however we need to continue to build on this.
That is why the Scottish Government is developing a Technologies for Learning Strategy that will aim to further the use of technology in learning and assessment in a practical and organised way for the benefit of Scotland’s learners and Scotland’s economic growth.
We want to find out more about how technologies are already being used for teaching and learning. If you are a parent/guardian or a teacher/practitioner you can help us by completing a quick and easy, anonymous survey. Your views and opinions will help us with developing the strategy.
Please select the right survey for you and remember to complete it by 27 April 2011:
Technologies for Learning survey for teachers and practitioners
Technologies for Learning survey for parents and guardians

The people who can perhaps give us the most accurate view of how technologies are already being used for teaching and learning by schools are the learners themselves, so it’s a little surprising that they are not included in this survey. Perhaps they are, but via some other route?
Parents are unlikely to be able to say much about the details of classroom practice, and teachers and practitioners may not be able to see things as learners do.
Certainly those most affected by the Technologies for Learning Strategy will be the learners in Scotland’s schools now and in the years to come. For that reason alone, we should be including them in the process as much as we can.

Many thanks for your comments above on the importance of capturing the learner experience.
I can advise that the Scottish Government is working with YoungScot with a view to launch a similar survey aimed at learners.

I’m pleased to hear about the plans to work with YoungScot to launch a learner survey; that will enable the views of those above 11 years of age to be sampled. Clearly that won’t cover those in our Primary Schools, or early years establishments, so we need something else there.
In East Lothian, we regularly survey entire P6 cohorts re their learning experiences using a web-based survey in school, and that seems to work well for that age group. Perhaps something similar could be arranged to sample upper primary views?
Younger age groups will probably require an alternative approach. I’m sure they’d be happy to tell us what they think!

David,
Many thanks for contributing the above ideas – they have now have been passed on to the relevant officials, whom I believe have since been in touch to elaborate on the approach adopted and to hear and build from your experiences.

A version of this survey designed to gather the views of young people is now available on the YoungScot ‘SaysWho’ website.
