Defining excellence in science learning
‘I first became interested in science thanks to an inspirational physics teacher who made the subject exciting, relevant and fun. Most of my scientist friends say the same thing! Consequently I believe the best way to cultivate young people’s interest in science is to support science teachers.
This is also a key theme of the Science Excellence Group report.
We believe that Curriculum for Excellence provides a unique opportunity for schools to engage with the wider science community and create stronger partnerships with science centres, colleges, universities, industry and professional bodies.
These partners can all help teachers communicate the importance, excitement and relevance of science.
The group’s work was largely shaped by a thought-provoking meeting at Glasgow Science Centre. We invited guests from the science education community and for me, two contributions really stood out. Firstly, Lord Robert Winston, who brought not only great experience but also a recognition, that in Scotland we do a lot right in science learning and teaching – let’s not lose sight of that. Secondly, an inspirational presentation from a science teacher – Margaret Anne Johnston from St Luke’s School in Barrhead – a reminder that we have enthusiastic and innovative teachers who are embracing the challenge of a new curriculum and enthusing young people about science.
As a group we worked towards defining excellence in science learning and teaching and then thinking about what sort of support was needed to create the right environment for these practices to flourish.
The report covers several areas close to my heart like,
- the importance of interdisciplinary learning – it’s how most modern science research works!
- linking science and numeracy – weather forecasting relies on a numerical model of atmospheric processes….
- the need for innovative assessment – it’s a big challenge.
I hope teachers and education partners find the report useful and all feedback is most welcome!’
