Teaching Scotland’s Future

In a post on Engage in June, we reported how the recommendations in Graham Donaldson’s review of teacher education, “Teaching Scotland’s Future” are being taken forward.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning set up the National Partnership Group for Teaching Scotland’s Future, which we jointly chair.  Its role is to co-ordinate implementation of many of the main recommendations, bringing together the expertise and capacity of local authorities, universities, Scottish Government and other national partners, including the GTCS and Education Scotland.

We have made significant progress since June.  Three sub-groups have been established to consider how best to implement the recommendations in the Report.  The sub-groups are considering the early phase of professional learning; teachers’ career-long professional learning and professional development for leadership.

You can find more information about the sub-groups and their remits and membership on the National Partnership Group’s web page.  We have also set up a Strategic Reference Group of key stakeholders and colleagues to influence the work of the National Partnership Group and to keep its members informed about progress.

The planned activities of the National Partnership Group are set down in the workplan which was submitted to the Cabinet Secretary in September.  You can see the work plan and the Cabinet Secretary’s response in the key documents section of the web page.

As this work moves forward we are keen to hear from  education professionals and others and would encourage you to send us any questions or comments through this page.  In particular we would be interested to hear:

- How have you and your colleagues taken forward any of the changes outlined in Teaching Scotland’s Future?

- What do you think would make the biggest difference to supporting teachers in their professional responsibilities for learning?

Along with the chairs of the sub-groups, we will be updating on the work of the National Partnership Group on a regular basis.  The next update will be posted in January.
