As a parent of a child due to start S1 in August 2010 I am very concerned that after reading the info on the CFE their is NO information on what my daughter will be doing in S3/S4.
I am angry that their is no simple breakdown to reassure parents what lies ahead for our children.
How can I as a parent prepare my Daughter for these changes when I have no idea what they are.
With so many unanswered questions is it any wonder parents and teachers are concerned that this Educational reform is going ahead.
Given the recent cutbacks where is the funding to ensure all schools/Teachers are working towards the same standards.
Parents want simple answers not 10 point plans.

Homework - burden or benefit?

My P6 Daughter Is Becoming Disaffected Because of Homework.
She has always done very well but now she is asking why she has to do ever increasing amounts of homework when some ohers do less or even none at all. Psychologically from being a lover of learning in all environments, she is now seeing school as an obstacle. The Curriculum for Excellence approach is also beginning to annoy her where everything is a formulaic project with numeracy, literacy, health and cross-curricular aspects. We have asked her teacher to decrease the level of homework and this request reached the level of headteacher where it was granted – for one evening – then doubled the next! I am tempted to write and say that for the months of May and June she will be outside playing instead of doing homework. In my opinion, homework is damaging!

Homework - burden or benefit?

As a parent and teacher I have always hated homework. Children spend long enough sitting and working without having to do more in the evening. I feel that children need to develop other skills and abilities that come from socialising and taking part in out of school activites. Homework becomes a burden and can be a very negative part of a week day. Children who may need support often find they don’t get it and so they feel even worse at school the next day when they are tackled by their teacher or even castigated for not having done it.

There may be an opportunity for CfE to change homework to homelink activities which are not pieces of work to be completed every evening, but rather activites which engage children and parents in active learning or discussion. In this way it would no longer be such a burden to complete but may revolve around a dinner table discussion or some practical task in the home. Alternatively we could encourage children to develop their 4 capacities by embracing the outside world!
